| It pays to give |
[Dec. 13th, 2009|10:40 pm] |
Eric is gone for the next two days on business. He'll be in Chicago until tomorrow and then he's flying to Huntsville, AL before coming home. Since he's going to be gone we moved our schedule around and Delia went to visit her paternal grandparents yesterday instead of today. Today we were going to have some fun as a family and take her to Chucky Cheese. The parking lots was completely full when we drove by so we went to the mall to use the playground instead. I mean, if you're going to be uncomfortably crowded there's no sense paying for the privledge, right?
While we were there I popped into the book store to pick up a paperback. I noticed a sign that said they were having a book drive for kids who are spending Christmas in Children's hospital. Guys, I am a complete sucker for these things so I had to buy at least one book. It's a good thing I'm on a cash diet now because I probably would have gone overboard. Instead I picked out "The Cat Who Thought He Was a Mouse", Delia's favorite Little Golden Book.
When I took my books up to pay I told the cashier that I didn't need a bag and the Little Golden Book was a donation for their book drive. She looked very surprised and pleased by this. She grinned and thanked me for the donation. Then, as she was scanning my items, she asked if I had a coupon. I didn't and answered such. She replied, "Yes, you do. I'll make sure you do." She proceeded to punch in a coupon code that gave me a discount on my highest priced book. How awesome is that? It's not something I expected or asked for but it really made my day. |

[Dec. 12th, 2009|08:32 pm] |
The other day Delia was eating breakfast. I heard her say, "Blueberries, do you want to go to the party in my tummy? Yeeeeeaaah!" and then she ate it.
Eric still hasn't noticed the new guinea pig. I'm kind of curious to see how long it will take. I left the door open while I was in and out filling their water bottles while he was upstairs. He passed by the room and all 4 of the girls were right at the front of the cage eating veggies. The thing is, he doesn't care at all about the guinea pigs and tends to be rather unaware of them except when Delia drags him over. It could take a while before he discovers her.
I had to run errands tonight and went to The Home Depot, Michael's, Petco, Old Navy and Kroger in just about 2 hours. Not bad at all, really. As much as I hate grocery shopping it really is more efficient for me to go once a week. When I tried to do it all once or twice a month I ended up buying too much we didn't need and not enough of what we did.
Speaking of spending more wisely, I'm going on an all cash diet and gave Eric my debit card. I already cut up my credit card so this means no plastic at all for me. I'm OK with that. If I really need to I can drive to the bank and get money. That being such a pain in the butt will keep me from just taking out a couple extra bucks here and there. If I can't get to it then I can't spend it. Right now I'm too unaware of what I'm spending and I need to get myself in the habit of paying attention. The funny thing is that I decided to go on a cash diet after watching a few episodes of "The Bank of Mom and Dad" which is a show about young women ridiculously in debt. Eric wonders why I watch stupid reality TV, but "Clean House" motivated me to get rid of a ton of items and make $1000 at my garage sale. "What Not To Wear" is helping me pay more attention to what I buy which has made me look and feel better about myself. Now I'm motivated to get my spending under control. You just can't complain about that.
On that note, I'm rather scornful when it comes to self-help books and I don't know why. I know many of them work and there's a lot of good that comes from them. Still, I guess it comes down to those people who read one and become zealots. Kind of like the Tony Robbins chick at my garage sale. It weirds me out. However, using reality television to change your life is somehow OK. *shrug* Whatever works, I suppose. |

| Surgery |
[Dec. 10th, 2009|11:17 am] |
|
My dad called last night and my mom came through surgery perfectly. The made two small incisions and sucked it out like they did her gall bladder years ago. Her recovery from that surgery was quick so I hope this one heals just as fast. The doctor did say her appendix was very inflamed, but had no ruptured. I'm glad she called me that morning to ask if Delia caught anything from her. If she hadn't I wouldn't have mentioned appendicitis and she might not have gone to the hospital yesterday. I'm glad turned out OK. |

| What's Up, Doc? |
[Dec. 9th, 2009|07:07 pm] |
Well, I nailed it. My mom does have appendicitis and she's going to have surgery. My dad said they might be taking it out tonight if they can track down a surgeon.
You know, it's interesting to me that I'm kind of good at coming up with a diagnosis. I find the symptoms of disease interesting and I guess I have more than a few stored in my head. It's probably one of the reasons my mom has repeatedly tried to convince me I'd be a good doctor. I disagree because I have no interest at all in treating patients. I guess if I could be a cranky diagnostician like House it would be OK. Or a medical examiner might fit me too. But actually taking care of sick people sounds horrible to me.
So while I'm all Yay! because I was right about her disease I think it sucks hard that she has to have surgery. Especially now. My mom's really into Christmas so it's pretty bad timing. I wonder if we'll be going to their house for the holidays after all. I'm not into dragging kids around from place to on Christmas. It's a headache and makes the day stressful rather than fun. However, I think I can make an exception in this case. It would break my mom's heart to miss Delia on Christmas, you know. |

| My mom's appendix |
[Dec. 9th, 2009|12:20 pm] |
I think my mom may have to have surgery soon. She was telling me about feeling ill on and off since Sunday night and what she described to me fits a case of Chronic Appendicitis to the tee! She has to pee a lot, has vomited, ran a fever, feels constipated and has a tender lower right abdomen. She has an appointment to see her doctor tomorrow morning. I warned her that if her fever or the pain comes back she needs to go to the emergency room straight away. Although she probably should go now anyway.
I just called their house and spoke to my dad. I was going to recommend they go up to the hospital to get her checked out today, but they're already on their way. *whew* |

| Tree for Sale |
[Dec. 8th, 2009|07:01 pm] |
I have a 7ft Lucas Pine artificial tree for $20. If anyone in the area is interested you can check it out on Craigslist. It's still factory sealed and in the same shape in which it left the store.
The listing has been live for all of about 30 seconds and I've already had a response. Yay! Hopefully this goes smoothly and the tree will be on its way to a new home shortly. |

| What's Up With Me |
[Dec. 7th, 2009|07:36 pm] |
Yesterday was a day for getting things done and I sure did. Eric helped me put a bunch of stuff into the attic and we pulled down the tree. I got it up and decorated yesterday. I also got about half the outdoor lights up. I need to go to the store and get an outdoor outlet splitter so I can plug more than one strand into my extension cord. I should have the rest up tomorrow. Other than that, we finally got Delia's play houses put away. I realized I have a bunch of lawn ornaments still in the flower beds so those have to be pulled. Maybe tomorrow while I'm finishing the lights.
Today Delia and I went to the chiropractor. Then we finally got over to the shelter to drop off the toys. I dug around in the garage and found a big truck Delia never opened so I added that to the pile. After all, she already has 2 big trucks in her outdoor toy bin. I also found a paint-your-own chalkboard kit from Melissa & Doug that I found unopened at the thrift store. Into the bag it went. As well as 4 sets of Little People and a talking Plex doll that I decided not to give Delia after all. She already has a Plex doll and she doesn't play with her singing Foofa at all. We ended up with 2 of the large Toys R Us bags full of stuff to take and they seemed happy with it. Still, it would be nice to do more. They looked like they still need a lot of toys. So, if you're in the area and you want to donate you can check their wish list for ideas.
After we left the shelter we went out to Pet Supplies Plus on Telegraph to pick up our new guinea pig. Delia decided we should call her Buttons so that's her new name. She suggested the names Lady and Grandpa first, but Buttons is the one that stuck. She came from Tiny Paws rescue and seems like a really sweet pig. She lived alone and is a little intimidated by our herd, but there hasn't been any blood flying so I'm sure it will turn out find. Now I just need to figure out a way to tell Eric about her. I mean, he probably wouldn't notice for a month if I just didn't say anything, but I don't want to hide her like I did something wrong. I didn't think to tell him when he first came home and now it feels all awkward. The thing is, I know he doesn't like having pets. Any pets. So I know he won't be happy about it, but since he doesn't feed, water or clean up after them he really has nothing to complain about, you know? Oh, well. I'll tell him, he'll be cranky and life will resume its normal rhythm. |
